Sophia Flood's paintings are built in a tactile language of stains, scrubby brush marks, material residues and dry veils of color. Departing from a range of sources and experiences, often rooted in geology or place, she works with moments of inversion and collapse – the passage from bone to fossil, for instance, or exchanges between positive and negative space. In painting, Flood negotiates between the map and the terrain, abandoning her source material to a puzzle of structure and intuited shape and allowing the image to reappear slowly, both uncovered and generated by interwoven layers. She feels for the shifting edges of forms that seem embedded in time, in memory, in the earth, or in a body.
